Aaron T. Beck: Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Nursing Centers Consortium!
The last two decades have seen tremendous advances in understanding and treating anxiety disorders. Cognitive therapy approaches, in particular, have achieved a broad basis of empirical support. This important book synthesizes the latest knowledge in the field and presents state-of-the-science guidelines for clinical practice. The authors are leading experts, including cognitive therapy pioneer Aaron T. Beck. User-friendly features include mini-manuals for treating the five most common anxiety disorders, concise clinical pointers, vivid case examples, and over three dozen reproducible handouts and forms.
Part I updates and reformulates the influential model of anxiety disorders that Beck and colleagues first proposed in 1985. The authors illuminate the many facets of maladaptive anxiety and the role of cognition in its development and maintenance. Hundreds of empirical studies testing the model's hypotheses are succinctly reviewed. Building on these foundations, Part II details core clinical strategies that are transdiagnostic in scope-effective and relevant for any type of anxious symptom presentation. This section describes step by step how to conduct thorough assessments, formulate individual cases, and implement cognitive restructuring and behavioral interventions. Part III delves more closely into specific, frequently encountered disorders: panic disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Disorder-specific data, conceptualizations, and treatment protocols give the clinician powerful tools for meeting each patient's needs.
Combining scholarly depth and comprehensiveness with practical utility, this is an essential reference for mental health practitioners and researchers of all stripes. It is an invaluable text for graduate-level seminars and clinical practica in clinical psychology, psychiatry, counseling, and social work.

Reviews
"The authors provide students and practitioners with the strong theoretical base that is a sine qua non for effective treatment. They show how cognition links up with multiple other etiological factors in anxiety and hence can serve well as a treatment target and focus. Marvelous, instructive clinical pearls accompany each theoretical point. An excellent chapter on assessment contains all the necessary rating forms needed for patient evaluation and monitoring of outcomes. Treatment techniques are described in depth; the book concludes with outstanding disorder-specific chapters. The definitive text." - Peter P. Roy-Byrne, Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington School of Medicine at Harborview Medical Center, USA
"The authors’ scientific expertise and clinical experience are evident in this well-written, practical book. It is an excellent contribution to the cognitive therapy literature that will enhance the skills of professionals and trainees, irrespective of theoretical orientation. Detailed case examples illustrate the application of cognitive therapy principles and practices for treating each of the anxiety disorders." - Kamila S. White, Department of Psychology, University of Missouri–Saint Louis, USA
"Clark and Beck have produced a landmark work. Scholarly and clinically rich, the book presents the contemporary status of the cognitive model of anxiety disorders with great clarity. It provides a comprehensive yet easy-to-read summary of the empirical literature and describes concrete clinical techniques for addressing some of the most common psychiatric problems. This book is essential reading for current and future mental health professionals." - Stefan G. Hofmann, Department of Psychology, Boston University, USA
"Exceptional. In this comprehensive and integrative work, Clark and Beck offer their latest insights in treating anxiety disorders and provide specific conceptual frameworks. Clinicians, students, and researchers will find this important work to be of immense value in guiding treatment and research. Included are a wealth of practical assessment and monitoring tools that can be used effectively with clients. The book will also be valuable as a course text in clinical psychology training programs." - Adrian Wells, Division of Clinical Psychology, University of Manchester, United Kingdom, and Director, Metacognitive Therapy Institute
