A transformed geopolitical environment after the Cold War, 9/11 and the Iraq war have fundamentally altered the security challenges of small states in Europe. Most importantly, the end of the Cold War reduced the traditional military threat to small states significantly.
Small States and International Security: Europe and Beyond offers an accessible, coherent and informative analysis of contemporary and future security challenges facing small states. It identifies both the challenges and the opportunities of small states and discusses the costs and benefits of the different security strategies followed by small states inside and outside Europe.
Providing a comparative perspective on small state security in Europe by comparing the European experience to small state security in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, this book makes an important contribution to the debate on the challenges and possibilities of small states and international security more generally. It will be of strong interest to students and scholars of European politics, security studies, international relations, foreign policy analysis, geopolitics, diplomatic studies and comparative political studies.
