Understanding Social Entrepreneurship: The Relentless Pursuit of Mission in an Ever-changing World

The purpose of this textbook is to immerse students in the theory and practice of the dynamic field of social entrepreneurship. It is intended to give them an understanding not only of the economic, social, political and personal value-laden underpinnings of this field, but also to help them understand the process of starting, growing and sustaining a social venture.

The book begins with a discussion of the relevance of social entrepreneurship in our global society and the identification of a set of Web sites that add on-going background to the student’s journey of discovery. It then defines social entrepreneurship and distinguishes it from commercial entrepreneurship. What then ensues is an in-depth discussion of the key activities in the development of a social venture: opportunity recognition, strategic planning, choosing and building an organizational structure, funding, measuring impact, and scaling. Each of these activities is explored in detail, through numerous examples, short problem-based case studies, insights from practicing social entrepreneurs, and the sharing of tools for practice. The final chapter explores future directions for the field.

This text is intended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students of social entrepreneurship. Students need not have prior coursework in entrepreneurship to understand and use this text.
