Chris Leland formerly served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the IU School of Education in Indianapolis. She initiated and currently directs an exchange program at IUPUI that provides opportunities for elementary and secondary students to experience six weeks of student teaching in China. Her recent publications include articles in Voices from the Middle, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, and Urban Education.
Mitzi Lewison is the co-project director of a United States Department of State grant in Kabul, which has established the first TESOL master's degree program in Afghanistan at Kabul Education University. This builds on her work in Afghanistan since 2006 that focused on rebuilding teacher education programs across the country.
Jerry Harste is emeritus professor and was the first faculty member to be named as the Martha Lea & Bill Armstrong Chair in Teacher Education on the Bloomington campus. He is past president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the National Reading Conference (now the Literacy Research Association), the National Conference on Language & Literacy, and the Whole Language Umbrella. Since retiring from IU, he has had time to develop his artistic skills. His watercolors have been featured in Language Arts, California English, and juried into several national watercolor exhibits. He holds “Signature Status” in the Bloomington Watercolor Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society.
