Innovation in Teaching and Learning

Routledge and the Association of Law Teachers would like to congratulate Emily Allbon and Sanmeet Kaur Dua on winning The Routledge/ALT Teaching Law with Technology Prize in 2013. Their collection of online skills tutorials Learnmore won out against stiff competition at this year’s ALT conference, where the robust and interactive panel session with Emily, Sanmeet and Aston University’s Odette Hutchinson was a particular highlight.

The competition was particularly strong this year, highlighting Emily and Sanmeet's achievement in winning the prize to which the prize committee can attest:

The technology used and developed by the Learnmore team allows students to access, in a user friendly and accessible form, at anytime and from any location, some of the foundational and fundamental legal conventions including research, case citations, mooting skills and tips, to name a few. The website is sleek and very professional; it is interactive and dynamic. Learnmore is a very worthy winner of the inaugural Teaching Law with Technology Prize from the Association of Law Teachers and Routledge. - Rebecca Huxley Binns, Chair, Association of Law Teachers

‘I am delighted to congratulate Emily and Sanmeet on their win, their fabulous website, and their inspirational commitment to student learning. It has been a wonderful first year for the prize with an incredibly strong field of entrants, and I am very proud to have had the opportunity to be involved. Projects such as Learnmore really showcase the possibilities for innovation, using technology in a thoughtful and engaged way that builds on collaboration with and feedback from students to create resources that will help them to succeed.’
- Emma Nugent, Commissioning Editor, Routledge Law

On winning the prize, Emily and Sanmeet had this to say about their experience:

We were delighted to be shortlisted for the ALT Learning with Technology award. It really gave us a chance to take stock of what we have achieved using technology on the Learnmore website to help students learn essential legal skills. It has been a valuable experience to see what innovations have been developed at other institutions and to see value being placed on the use of technology for real purpose in teaching and learning.
Having the opportunity to present the resource to colleagues at the annual ALT conference was fantastic for us and opened our eyes to the impact that this website has had on colleagues and students in other law schools. It has always been a priority of ours to develop a resource that is available freely to law students across institutions so that they can learn from it, contribute to it and take ownership of their learning. It has also been encouraging to see that our approach in involving students in the creation of resources was well-regarded. - Emily Allbon and Sanmeet Kaur Dua winners of the 2013 The Routledge/ALT Teaching Law with Technology Prize

Shortlisted entries from Odette Hutchinson at Aston University for the integrated use of technology in teaching and Kim Blackie at Northumbria for webcast infrastructure ensured that this was a strong first year for the prize. Odette had this to say on taking part:

This prize is a wonderful opportunity for educators to showcase innovative and effective approaches to technology enhanced legal education. It was an honour to be a finalist this year; the winning project Lawbore is an outstanding resource one that I will be recommending to my own students! - Odette Hutchinson, Senior Lecturer in Law at Aston University, finalist for the 2013 The Routledge/ALT Teaching Law with Technology Prize, Law Teacher of the Year 2013

	By Tim Crook

As media law becomes more complicated and some of the leading textbooks thicker and larger, this concise guide provides core information without patronizing those with existing knowledge or bamboozling those with little expertise.

Suitable for journalists, media workers, and anyone in the cultural or publishing industries, the book engages and addresses the Internet and blogging, social networking, instant messaging, digital multi-media publication and consumption as well as traditional print and broadcast.

Each chapter covers substantive 'black letter law' and regulation/ethics, and kept in mind throughout will be the difference in duties and obligations between words and pictures, print and broadcasting.

Anticipating a dynamically changing arena, the text is also backed up by downloadable sound podcasts, videocasts, Internet source links throughout the book text, and a companion website so that any significant updates are immediately accessible direct from the ebook.

Routledge Law Author of the Month for December 2012

Our Routledge Law author of the month for December is Chris Butler, author of Henri Lefebvre: Spatial Politics, Everyday Life and the Right to the City. Dr. Butler is a lecturer at the Griffith Law School in Australia. Read on for Dr. Butler's explanation of how this book came about.

'This book is the product of my longstanding interest in Henri Lefebvre’s work, which dates back to my reading of a number of key thinkers in the development of critical geography in the early 1990s. These writers included David Harvey, Edward Soja and Mark Gottdiener. As I began to explore this literature, I became aware of the profound influence that Lefebvre has had on the study of space, and more broadly on the development of the ‘spatial turn’ in the humanities and social sciences during the last 40 years. This prompted me to think about what could be done to address the apparent absence of any serious engagement with Lefebvre’s writing within legal scholarship.

Henri Lefebvre: Spatial Politics, Everyday Life and the Right to the City is the result of this period of research. The book provides an introduction to Lefebvre’s central ideas, including his open and original approach to marxist philosophy, his contribution to the study of the everyday and his theory of the production of space. I have used Lefebvre’s theoretical categories to conceptualise how law and state power are shaped by political struggles over the control and inhabitance of space. As a result, the book makes contributions to ongoing debates over Lefebvre’s work in relation to: the role of law and the state in the production of the ‘abstract space’ of contemporary capitalism, the politics and aesthetics of everyday life and the utopian implications for new forms of spatial ordering that are inherent in his concept of the ‘right to the city’. In the book, I have tried to demonstrate why I have found continuing inspiration from Lefebvre’s refusal to lapse into reductionist modes of explanation and his enthusiasm for the emancipatory possibilities which lie in our capacities to remake the spaces of everyday life.

In a global political environment where both the destructive power of neoliberalism and the bankruptcy of social democracy are increasingly apparent, Lefebvre’s thought has as much academic and practical relevance today as it did during the events of May ’68. I hope this book will stimulate further interest in his work amongst scholars investigating:

i. the spatial dimensions of legal and administrative power,
ii. contemporary struggles for the construction of new forms of spatial justice, and
iii. the emergence of radical political movements and participatory models of decision-making.'
