The Self Under Siege: A New Model of Differentiation

Differentiation refers to the struggle people face in striving to develop a sense of themselves as autonomous individuals. A fundamental question to have clients consider is: are they living based on the things that really light them up and give meaning to their lives, or are they living based on prescriptions from their past? Are they living according their own values and principles or according to the values and standards of others or society? A person’s identity is continually affected by interpersonal experiences that are either favorable or damaging to the development of his or her personality. In order for people to fulfill their destiny, they must free themselves from destructive influences. When someone is able to develop and sustain aspects of their unique identity, they’re able to live truly individualistic lives. This Webinar teaches an innovative approach to differentiation, a four-step process developed by Robert Firestone, Ph.D. that involves:

	1. Breaking with internalized thought processes, critical attitudes toward self and others.

	2. Altering the negative personality traits in oneself that represent an incorporation of aversive traits of one’s parents.

	3. Identifying/relinquishing patterns of defense formed as an adaptation to painful events in childhood.

	4. Developing one’s own values, ideals and beliefs.

When taking this challenge of differentiation, clients have their best chance of living a goal-directed life and developing themselves to their fullest.
Call for New Editor of Journal of Neurotherapy
Deadline for letter of application: July 1, 2013

Taylor & Francis is now requesting applications for the editorship of the Journal of Neurotherapy: Investigations in Neuromodulation, Neurofeedback and Applied Neuroscience. The current editor, Dr. Adam Clarke (University of Wollongong, Wollongong, NSW, Australia), is finishing his term of office at the end of 2013. The new editorship would, therefore, commence from the first issue of the 2014 volume and would run for three consecutive years. The next editor is expected to begin reviewing manuscripts by September 1, 2013.

The Journal of Neurotherapy provides an integrated, multidisciplinary perspective on clinically relevant research, treatment, and public policy for neuromodulation techniques and applied neuroscience. The journal reviews important findings in these fields with a focus on electroencephalography (EEG), neurofeedback, quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Simulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (with a focus on treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders). The journal also provides relevant findings from the diversity of disciplines involved in the study of neuromodulation and applied neuroscience and offers interpretive commentary to clarify this information. Previously, the journal has drawn from expertise inside and outside of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) to deliver material, which integrates the diverse aspects of the field, including basic science, clinical aspects, philosophy, training and certification issues, treatment evaluation, and technology and equipment.

The Journal of Neurotherapy represents the scholarly commitment of the field and reflects the highest standards of investigation, clinical practice, education, and evaluation of patient care. Sections featured in the journal currently include: Scientific Features, News from Other Journals and Web Sites, Technical Notes, Book and Software Reviews, Clinical Corner, and Letters to the Editor. Applications are welcome from individuals who have had some involvement with the journal and from those beyond its community. The candidate should have a high level of commitment to collaborative journal work and the best standards of peer-review publishing, along with significant achievements in this field of scholarship.

For more information about the journal editor’s position and responsibilities or to submit an application (i.e., CV and a vision statement), interested parties are encouraged to contact Amanda Ashworth, Associate Editor, at amanda.ashworth@taylorandfrancis.com.

What if analysts took steps to keep their analysands out of the hospital when they were beginning to breakdown? What would that look like? In Catch Them Before They Fall: The Psychoanalysis of Breakdown, the eminent psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas, walks us through that process.

To listen to the interview, check out the New Books in Psychoanalysis podcast here.

Beginning with his treatment of psychotic and manic depressive patients in the 1970s in London, Bollas sought to increase patients psychoanalytic sessions and to work with a team of psychiatrists and social workers who were analytically savvy. When these fragile patients disturbances became heightened, Bollas et co. worked in such a way that none of his patients needed to endure the shock and awe of hospitalization. Now, 40 years later, he has published a book that looks deeply into a way of working that confidently declares psychoanalysis to be THE treatment of choice for the person breaking down. By expanding sessions from five times a week to twice a day seven days a week or from morning to early evening, he discusses with us how breakdowns attended to in this way can become their antithesis: a breakthrough. He is passionate and as always, an intelligent maverick.

This interview promises to give analysts and analysands cause to pause regarding our relationship to the frame and the doing of business as usual. His belief in the human need to find a human other to hear us in our darkest moments, an other especially attuned to unconscious meanings, is convincing. For Bollas, being with a person breaking down demands we change our modus operandi. A breakdown is in a way an opportunity that can be dealt with by psychoanalytic means. To not attend to a breakdown is to put the analysand at risk of simply and devastatingly sealing over the elementary forces that brought the breakdown to the surface in the first place. Always thought provoking, in this interview Bollas weds theory and technique, expanding the reach of psychoanalysis with great creativity.

The World Library of Mental Health celebrates the important contributions to mental health made by leading experts in their individual fields. Each author has compiled a career-long collection of what they consider to be their finest pieces: extracts from books, journals, articles, major theoretical and practical contributions, and salient research findings.

For the first time ever the work of each contributor is presented in a single volume so readers can follow the themes and progress of their work and identify the contributions made to, and the development of, the fields themselves.

Each book in the series features a specially written introduction by the contributor giving an overview of his career, contextualizing his selection within the development of the field, and showing how his own thinking developed over time.
