A national Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme for England delivered by The Reading Agency and the Society of Chief Librarians with funding from the Arts Council has been launched. The scheme is supported by a Reading Well Books on Prescription core list of books and will be available from English libraries from June 2013.

There is strong evidence from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) that self-help reading can help people with common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and phobias sometimes on its own or with other forms of treatment.

The Reading Well Books on Prescription core list of books have been recommended by experts. They have been tried and tested and found to be useful by others. The Reading Agency has produced a guide to help you make the most of the books that are on the core list which is available here.

The scheme is being supported by:

The Royal College of General Practitioners, The Royal College of Nursing, The Royal College of Psychiatrists, The British Psychological Society, the Department of Health’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Programme (IAPT), the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapies, and Mind.
