Strategies to Improve Perception of Body Schema
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties with perception of body schema:
- To improve the perception of body parts, it is helpful to touch the neglected body part and ask the person to identify it.
- Name a body part and then indicate or move the body part as instructed.
- Have the individual negotiate routes involving left and right turns, with immediate feedback regarding correctness of the action can help treat disorientation to the left or right side of the body.
- Use compensatory techniques that involve the use of a band, bracelet, or watch to consistently represent either the left or right side of the individual's body.
- For individuals that have poor awareness of the space their body occupies, hallways and living spaces may need to be cleared to prevent running into furnishings or other objects. Also the affected individual may need repeated cuing regarding body positions and awareness.
