Strategies to Improve Depth Perception
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties with depth perception:
- Have the individual engage in remedial activities for weaknesses in depth perception such as incorporating other sensory modalities, especially the senses of touch and body position (i.e., tactile-kinesthetic senses) to test distances and the relative orientation of objects. For example, individuals should be encouraged to explore their environment by touching objects to help them navigate in space and remember the location of objects in their home or work setting. It may also benefit them to discuss how shadows and relative size cues can be more efficiently utilized, especially for those individuals with impaired or disparate binocular abilities.
- Family members can assist individuals with weaknesses in depth perception by providing auditory cues (e.g., "The curb is right in front of you") to help the affected individual negotiate the environment and to effectively and safely manipulate materials.
- Consider purchasing computer software specifically designed for the remediation of deficits in depth perception, as well as three-dimensional computer games.
- Refine lighting sources to best take advantage of shadows, contrast and edge illumination.
- Use brightly-colored tape to improve contrast, and ultimately distance judgments. Environments that are dark or otherwise provide minimal depth cues are best avoided.
