Disorders of Self-Regulation
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties regulating their behavior (e.g., impulsiveness, disinhibition):
- For individuals with more severe disorders of self-regulation, consider neuropsychologically-based milieu treatment programs.
- Provide instruction in mnemonic coping strategies such as PDSA cycle (i.e., Plan, Do, Study, Act). Ask the individual to plan an activity (e.g., "What am I trying to accomplish?""). Then, ask them to attempt (do) a strategy, monitor (i.e., study) the outcome, and then act accordingly in the future.
- Provide gradual ongoing repeated exposure to challenging tasks which reveal personal strengths and limitations.
- Recommend use of computerized cognitive orthotics, such as PDAs and pager systems.
