Disorders of Termination
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties terminating behavior (e.g., perseverative behaviors):
- Consider individual psychotherapy and behavioral therapy to extinguish undesired behaviors and reinforce adaptive ones.
- Provide direct statements to extinguish/limit behaviors, such as, "That statement was inappropriate," or "You are not supposed to touch others," immediately after the unwanted behavior.
- Consider family psychotherapy to enhance adaptive coping and communication.
- Redirect the individual to the task at hand, and direct their attention away from inappropriate objects actions.
- Refer for a medical evaluation to consider medication to manage impulsiveness/disinhibition.
