Encoding and Consolidation
Following are suggestions to assist individuals who have difficulties encoding information:
- Minimize distractors in the environment.
- Provide soft music/lighting (for some individuals).
- Have the individual focus on one task at a time.
- Have the individual maintain eye contact with others.
- Have the individual repeat what was stated to him/her.
- Encourage the person to ask questions to ensure that they comprehend what is stated.
- Use a memory notebook.
- Use a daily planner.
- Provide external aides, such as post-it notes, "to-do" lists, etc.
- Use alarm clocks and timers as reminders (e.g., when to take medications, etc.).
- Have the individual take notes/make lists for things to remember or tasks to complete.
- Increase the relevance of presented information (e.g., make it relevant to the person's daily life, e.g., have them restate information "in their own words," etc.).
- Provide associations between information to be remembered in order to improve generalization of learning (e.g., notepad by phone to take messages, basket by door for keys, etc.).
- Have the individual repeat information and tasks (i.e., practice makes perfect).
- Label drawers, cabinets, dressers, etc.
