General Strategies
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties with organization and managing behaviors:
- For individuals with more severe executive function disorders, consider regular counseling to address behavioral difficulties.
- Repeat tasks to make behaviors routine (i.e., practice makes perfect).
- Have the individual break down tasks into component parts and progress from the easiest to most complex components. Have them check off completion of each successive component as they complete the task.
- Modify the environment, social, or work setting so as to reduce the likelihood of failure in completing tasks. This will include organizing the environment and providing compensatory strategies (e.g., lists of tasks to be completed, computers, calculators, memory notebooks, etc.).
- Make daily activities as routine as possible (e.g., lunch at noon, Tuesday is grocery day, etc.)
- Instruct individuals to pace themselves, thus reducing stress and minimizing chances for difficulties.
- Arrange for limited responsibilities, with an increase in responsibilities once the basic tasks are mastered/completed.
