General Strategies to Improve Receptive Language Weaknesses
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties understanding what others say:
- Talk slowly with natural rhythm and prosody and use frequent breaks.
- Keep messages short, direct, and in the active voice.
- Avoid the use of slang, figurative speech, and idioms (e.g., ""Are you hungry enough to eat a horse?").
- It may be helpful to have others read aloud and repeat any information that is to be communicated. Similarly, information can be tape recorded and reviewed, as can lectures.
- It can be of assistance to teach those with receptive language difficulties the most appropriate manner in which to ask for clarifications if they cannot understand others.
