Strategies to Improve Spatial Perception
Following are general strategies to help individuals who have difficulties with spatial perception:
- To improve weaknesses in spatial perception it is recommended that the individual practice identifying and interacting with objects in various forms of juxtaposition (i.e., graded exposure). To be most effective, remediation should be as similar to the anticipated environment as possible. The graded identification process will typically require the person to both locate the objects, as well as to negotiate through space to touch or retrieve the objects. The individual can be instructed to construct a diagram depicting the relative location of objects.
- Ensure that rooms are organized, uncluttered, and consistent, and particularly in halls and pathways.
- Use maps or location lists (e.g., instructions that the comb is kept behind the brush).
- Provide regular locations for items to be stored that can be labeled to minimize reliance on the ability to remember settings.
